A Good Day To Go Fishing

Oklahoma City's Lake Hefner - lake levels 25 feet below normal based on drought and primarily "unregulated" usage of a finite resource by our great citizens of OKC - let's go wash our cars, green up the golf courses and private entrances and ohh, let the water run when you brush your teeth.

NOW WHAT DO WE DO WHEN THERE'S NO WATER TO SUSTAIN US?

The Lake Hefner Boat Club - we need action now to save the boat season - good reason to conserve.

So OKC "purchases" millions of gallons of water from Lake Canton via a little known agreement made in the 1930s much to the dismay of Lake Canton residents also low on drinking water - "lets sell our water to them which makes alot of sense". Five days later the water completes its 150 mile journey South and begins fill of our Lake Hefner requirements.

Millions of gallons of water begin to fill the tub - levels begin to rise - Problem solved.

Along with millions of gallons of water, millions of walleye fingerlings forced to come along for the ride to their new home.

And waiting for the baby walleyes are hundreds of seagulls, hungry seagulls - let the feast begin.

And the tide rolls in. And the tide rolls in. Crisis solved.

And the birds swoon in ... feeding frenzy to be taken advantage of.

Airborne assault.

More and more birds arrive to feed.

Stealth. Waiting for their turn in the kitchen.

Dinner is served.

I feel like the photographer watching bears in Alaska fishing for salmon. Seagulls are precision preditors when their prey abounds - amazing to watch.

Many eyes watch the spectacle unfold in awe of nature (including myself).

Some fishing strategies are to snatch the fish turned up midair in white water.

Some prefer calmer waters.

Snatch and eat has to happen quickly or the fish escapes or is lost to other seagulls.

On and on and on the onslaught continues. Thankfully there are some "lucky" fish and life goes on.

New birds arrive and feed. Fat birds stand nearby ready for their second course.

Going home empty.
